Restoration Expert for Plant-for-Ghana



Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana is looking for a Restoration Expert for the Plant-for-Ghana hybrid ecosystem restoration project starting in April 2024

(Part-time / 12 hours a week)

The position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Create a map of the project region and project site, including existing landscape features and suitability for different restoration methods
  • Review and summarise relevant academic and grey literature on the drivers of deforestation in the region, strategies for woody savannah restoration, ecology of woody savannah ecosystem, agroforestry and other topics as required
  • Design and carry out field-based surveys of existing vegetation at project site and in reference ecosystems
  • Establish monitoring protocol for project site and train staff in monitoring and evaluation
  • Collaborate with Project Officer and Project Manager to write Plant-for-Ghana’s restoration strategy
  • Establish positive relationships with managers of nearby natural protected areas and identify opportunities for collaboration to achieve conservation aims
  • Improve nursery management and seed sourcing strategy
  • Work closely with the local community to co-design project strategy and facilitate knowledge sharing

Minimum required qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Master’s or PhD in ecology, restoration ecology or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Competency in GIS software (preferably QGIS)
  • Knowledge of Ghanaian tree species and ability to identify most trees to species in the field
  • 3+ years experience carrying out vegetation surveys in the field
  • Ability to lead a team of field assistants and ensure high quality field data under challenging conditions
  • Excellent communication and outreach skills
  • Experience with methods for monitoring populations of bird/mammal/insect populations is desirable but not essential
  • Knowledge of agroforestry systems and biodiversity promotion in agricultural contexts is desirable
  • Ability to work within an international team, with colleagues from multiple countries and cultures (excellent spoken and written English will be necessary)
  • Understanding of national and regional restoration and conservation policies, laws and frameworks in Ghana
  • Highly self-motivated and ability to work with a high level of autonomy

Remuneration is based on a local salary scheme, which follows the principle of local customs and appropriateness. The employment is based on the laws of Ghana. The appointment is limited to one year and renewal based on performance evaluation.
